Pars Today – Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Hospital has cemented Iran’s position as a leading organ transplantation hub in West Asia by completing its 2,000th liver transplant.

According to Dr. Ali Jafarian, Head of the hospital’s liver transplant unit, Iran, along with Turkey, is at the forefront of liver transplantation in the region, with outcomes on par with international standards. Imam Khomeini Hospital performs between 15 and 20 liver transplants each month, offering high-quality services at significantly lower costs than many other countries.

This major achievement is the result of the medical team’s tireless efforts since the year 2001. Dr. Jafarian described liver transplantation as one of the most complex and strategic medical treatments in the world, noting that many countries lack the necessary specialized infrastructure for such procedures. Fortunately, Iran holds a prominent position in West Asia in this field.

He added that despite existing limitations, Iran’s transplant outcomes are comparable to those of leading global centers, with a five-year patient survival rate of around 75 percent—a figure that aligns with international benchmarks. /IRIB news agency
