Pars Today – The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations emphasized that any disruption to maritime transportation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz and its consequences are the responsibility of the United States.

According to Pars Today, citing IRNA, the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations announced on Tuesday that Iran is not a member of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea; therefore, it is not bound by regulations based on that treaty.

The mission stated that Iran, as the principal coastal state where the Strait of Hormuz lies within its territorial sea, has the legitimate and legal right to take necessary and proportionate measures to address emerging security threats, ensure safe navigation, and prevent the misuse of the Strait of Hormuz for hostile or military purposes.

The Permanent Mission of Iran to the United Nations added that any disruption to maritime transportation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, and the consequences arising from it, would be the responsibility of the United States, whose illegal actions endanger international navigation.

The Iranian mission also emphasized that lasting stability and security in the Persian Gulf and the broader region can only be achieved through the sustained and permanent cessation of aggression against Iran, along with credible guarantees of non‑recurrence and full respect for Iran’s legitimate sovereign rights and interests.
