Iran and Oman agree to establish temporary maritime corridor in Hormuz Strait

Pars Today – The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Sultanate of Oman announced in a joint statement that they are discussing the establishment of a joint temporary maritime corridor in the Strait of Hormuz and the implementation of a joint project to clear the strait of mines.

According to Pars Today, citing Mehr News Agency, Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al Busaidi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during his working visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran to discuss issues related to the Strait of Hormuz. The talks focused on the importance of restoring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz while preserving the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the two countries.

During the talks, in light of the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz following the recent U.S. war against Iran and its repercussions, the two sides reviewed a phased framework that could provide a practical basis for moving forward and restoring safe shipping routes through the strategic waterway.

Under the framework under discussion, the two sides have put forward the establishment of a joint temporary maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as an agreement to carry out a joint project to clear the strait of mines.

It was also agreed that technical negotiations between Iran and Oman would continue to reach an agreement on a permanent maritime corridor and the future management of the Strait of Hormuz.

As part of this framework, the two sides also discussed establishing a mechanism for information exchange, maritime traffic management, and the provision of navigation and security-related services.

In another part of the statement, Iran and Oman stressed the importance of holding joint consultations with regional countries and the littoral states of the Persian Gulf. The two sides also emphasized the need to comply with applicable international law and respect the sovereign rights of the littoral states.

Al Busaidi: Talks with Araghchi Were Constructive

Meanwhile, Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi wrote on X on Tuesday night: “Constructive dialogue in Tehran with my colleague Dr Araghchi. I am hopeful we will soon announce a temporary corridor for the Strait of Hormuz and practical arrangements to restore safe navigation.”

Al Busaidi added: “Future management of the Strait and a permanent solution will follow in due course, as per article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum.”

Araghchi: Iran’s Commitment to Peace and Stability Is Pursued Alongside Steadfast Diplomacy

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote in a social media post on Tuesday night: “Iran’s commitment to peace and stability is matched by steadfast diplomacy with our neighbors.”

He added: “Proposed framework for new corridor, joint mine-clearing, and future management of Hormuz is case in point.”
