At least seven people have been killed in a mass shooting in the US state of California hours after two students were shot dead in Iowa.

The California fatalities occurred as the western state was reeling from another stunning mass shooting, which left ten people dead on Saturday.

The Monday killings happened at two locations in the coastal northern city of Half Moon Bay, and the suspect was later taken into custody after driving to a police parking lot.

Police responding to a call found four people dead at the first location in Half Moon Bay, then found three more dead at another place nearby, Sheriff Christina Corpus told a news conference.

Half Moon Bay is about 30 miles (50 km) south of San Francisco.
