US Concerned over progress in Iran-Oman talks on Strait of Hormuz

Pars Today – The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reported that Washington is concerned that an agreement between Iran and Oman could consolidate Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Pars Today, citing IRIB, U.S. officials said early Tuesday that talks between Oman and Iran aimed at increasing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz were making progress.

The unnamed officials told The Wall Street Journal that “talks between Oman and Iran could ease pressure on global energy markets.”

They went on to explain that “there are concerns that an agreement between Iran and Oman could solidify Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.”

The report also said that U.S. President Donald Trump prefers an agreement between Iran and Oman that would fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, rather than one that would leave Tehran with greater control over commercial traffic.
