Deadly floods in Nepal: At least 900 people killed or missing

Pars Today – Massive flooding and mudslides in areas along the Tibet-Nepal border have left more than 100 people dead and around 800 missing.

According to Pars Today, citing IRIB, the flooding, which reportedly originated in Tibet, swept through central Nepal on Wednesday, destroying cities and villages. The disaster also damaged roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities.

Nepalese authorities said the bodies of 100 people had been recovered, while around 500 people were missing along the country’s border. Chinese state media outlet CGTN also reported that three people had been killed and 265 others were missing following the mudslides.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister said an earthquake struck Tibet three minutes before the flooding and may have caused a glacial lake to burst. Nepal’s Meteorological Department also said the flooding was not caused by rainfall.

Around 100 people have been rescued from the affected areas, 30 of whom have been hospitalized. In addition, 80 security personnel, including 44 members of the Nepalese Army, are missing.

Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise. Estimates indicate that the damage to Nepal’s infrastructure amounts to around 200 billion rupees, or $1.3 billion.
