  • UNSC unofficial meeting example of US abuse of international mechanisms: Iran

Ministry of Foreign Affairs has slammed the US dual standards at an unofficial UNSC meeting on Iran, noting that Washington misuses international mechanisms to serve its own interests.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the informal meeting of the United Nations Security Council “is a clear example of the abuse of international mechanisms by the American government for its illegal purposes and meddling in internal affairs of other states.”

“The US, in an uncivilized and undemocratic manner, did not allow any opponent member states to give a speech,” the statement read, at the time only a few guests, a few of its allied countries and itself were allowed to express their opinion.

In the meeting, which was not welcomed by the member states, ambassadors from the US and Albania were the only high-ranking officials present.

Preventing 19 member countries from expressing their thoughts and reading their statements that were in favor of Iran, according to the statement, “proved that the US administration is pursuing media dictatorship against independent countries even at the UN.”

“The meeting showed that the US misuses international mechanisms, especially the UNSC, to put political pressure on independent states, which distorts multilateralism and international cooperation,” the statement went on to read.

The Foreign Ministry statement pointed out to US rights violation, saying, “While the US has a long history of violation of human rights, Washington has always proved to be unconcerned whether human rights are applied or not and has tried to use human rights as a tool to pursue its political agenda.”

“The Islamic Republic views the US’s measure as meddling in the internal affairs of independent countries, which violates the UN Charter,” it further explained.

Moreover, the Ministry said the Islamic Republic of Iran, which is committed to cultural and civilized values and implements human rights in line with international law and recognizes the right to peaceful gathering “condemns foreign intervention and ill-wished media campaigns, which triggers violence and riot.”
