Iranian FM: Europe has no right to exploit a resolution it failed to uphold

Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi
Pars Today – Iran's Foreign Minister rejected claims by three European countries regarding the activation of mechanisms under the 2015 nuclear deal, stressing: "The three European countries cannot and must not be allowed to undermine the credibility of the UN Security Council by exploiting a resolution they themselves failed to adhere to."
According to Pars Today, citing IRNA, Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated in a Sunday night tweet that he had sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the Security Council, the EU High Representative, and UNSC members, clarifying:
"In this letter, I reiterated that the three European countries (E3) lack any legal, political, or moral legitimacy to trigger the JCPOA mechanisms or UNSC Resolution 2231 (2015)."
Araghchi added: "Through their actions and statements—including political and material support for the recent illegal and unjustified military aggression by the Israeli regime and the U.S., violations of the JCPOA’s fundamental principles, and persistent long-term failure to meet their obligations—the E3 have effectively forfeited their status as 'participants' in the JCPOA. Thus, any attempt by them to revive defunct UNSC resolutions is invalid and legally void."
The Foreign Minister further noted: "In response to the U.S.'s unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA, Iran first exhausted all dispute resolution mechanisms under the agreement and then gradually initiated compensatory measures under Article 36. Throughout this process, Iran made extensive efforts to persuade remaining parties to return to their commitments. However, the E3 not only reneged on their obligations but actively participated in the U.S.'s so-called 'maximum pressure' campaign and recently played a role in military aggression against Iran."
Araghchi added: Actors with such a track record can never claim 'good faith.' The E3 cannot and must not be permitted to exploit a resolution they disregarded, thereby eroding the UN Security Council’s credibility. They should heed their own advice from their August 20, 2020, letter to the U.S.: 'Refrain from any action that deepens divisions in the Security Council or seriously undermines its functioning.'"
He emphasized: "The Islamic Republic of Iran has demonstrated its capability to counter any barbaric aggression or what they call 'dirty games' born of delusion. Yet, we remain prepared to reciprocate meaningful diplomacy based on goodwill."
