Peace strategic pipeline: Iran pursuing India-Pakistan convergence, the US hell-bent on tension

Pars Today- The naming of the pipeline transferring Iran's oil to India and Pakistan as "peace" stems from the general idea to facilitate building of relations between the countries via an important and strategic pipeline.

With the Iranian president's trip to Pakistan, once more rumors were heard on whether to implement or not the peace pipeline between the two countries. Since 1990, a concept under the title of "peace pipeline" was formed in the climate of Iran's relations and economy with countries such as India and Pakistan with the participation of the UAE, etc.

Based on the letter of understanding, Iran was committed to sell its gas within a 25-year period to India and Pakistan at a price that was agreed upon.

During the next years, even talks were held on joining of Turkmenistan and Qatar to maintain natural gas of this huge project alongside Iran, but all these ideas, due to various reasons including obstructionism of the US, were not feasible to implement.

Basically, the reason for naming of the pipeline transferring Iran's oil to India and Pakistan as "peace" stems from the general idea to facilitate building of relations between the countries via an important and strategic pipeline. It shouldn't be forgotten that, at that period, tension was rife between India and Pakistan in issues like Kashmir and so on.

Peace pipeline

These tensions had taken the two countries to the brink of military clashes and official entering of the nuclear club.

Iran believed that this pipeline would cause spread of peace. Some maintain that it is no more necessary to call the pipeline as "peace", because due to the special pressures of the US, India has left the project. The Emiratis accepted to pay one billion dollars for the preliminary investment of the pipeline. After the exit of India from the project, it went almost into a coma. Iran, however, proved its good intention and willpower and laid the pipeline approximately up to the Pakistani border. It is clear that Pakistan, with a little internal will, can put this project into action and prepare the ground for itself as a great player in the region. This idea is a win-win game which benefits all sides.

It should be hoped that after joining of Pakistan, the ground will be provided for joining of other players including India, UAE, Qatar and Turkmenistan to this pipeline.
