Russia officially opposes activation of “Snapback” mechanism
Pars Today – On Thursday, Russia officially opposed the plan by Germany, France, and the United Kingdom to activate the “snapback” mechanism and reinstate United Nations Security Council sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Russia’s permanent mission to the UN sent a note to the Security Council emphasizing that any attempt to restore old Security Council resolutions would be “illegitimate,” “ineffective,” “without legal basis,” and “harmful” to diplomatic processes.
In the note, Moscow stressed that according to UNSC Resolution 2231 and the provisions of the JCPOA, the use of the snapback mechanism is only permitted when the requesting country, as one of the JCPOA participants, has completed all dispute-resolution steps outlined in paragraphs 36 and 37 of the agreement.
Russia further noted that Germany, France, and the UK have not followed these steps and, particularly after the U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA in May 2018, have themselves contributed to a “fundamental breach” of the agreement and Resolution 2231. The note also described Iran’s compensatory measures, including the reduction or suspension of certain nuclear commitments, as a legitimate response based on the rights granted under the JCPOA.
