Pars Today - The construction and launch of the Jamaran Moudge-class frigate was a clear message to the world: Despite all the cruel Western sanctions, Iran is capable of indigenizing the most complex military technologies and employing them on the path to securing its national security.

The Jamaran frigate, as one of the important symbols of Iran's defense self-sufficiency, is a clear example of the capability of domestic engineers in designing and building advanced surface vessels. According to Pars Today, the Moudge-class frigate, which takes its name from an area in Tehran, is not just a warship, but a strategic message about Iran's determination to ensure its maritime security in critical waters like the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

The birth of a naval giant

Jamaran, identified by hull number 76, is considered the first Moudge-class frigate. Its design and construction took several years, and it was officially commissioned into the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy on February 16, 2011. While its appearance bears some similarities to the Alvand-class destroyers, reports indicate that over 70% of its design and construction is indigenous, with significant upgrades to its radar, electronic, and weapons systems.

Specifications and combat capabilities

The Jamaran Moudge-class frigate, with a length of approximately 94 meters and a weight of 1400 tons, is a multi-role surface vessel. Its most important combat features can be summarized as follows:

Diverse armaments: Jamaran is equipped with a full arsenal:

Surface-to-surface missiles: The frigate is equipped with four launchers for "Qader" or "Noor" missiles. These anti-ship missiles have the capability to target enemy vessels at distances ranging from tens to hundreds of kilometers.

Naval gun: A main 76mm gun is installed on its deck, used for engaging surface and aerial targets at short range.

Close-In defense systems: CIWS (Close-In Weapon System) and 20mm cannons to counter very close threats such as fast attack boats.

Surface-to-air missiles: The frigate has the capability to install short-range air defense systems, providing a defensive shield against enemy aircraft and helicopters.

Torpedoes: The Jamaran Moudge-class frigate is equipped with three 324mm torpedo launchers for anti-submarine warfare.

Electronic and radar systems: The Jamaran is equipped with air and surface search radars, an electronic warfare system, and an electronic surveillance system, giving it the ability to intercept, identify, and mislead targets and threats.

Strategic role in the Iranian Navy

The role of the Jamaran Moudge-class frigate goes beyond that of an ordinary vessel. This frigate forms the core of the Iranian Navy's "naval groups." Its primary missions include "protecting Iran's shipping lanes and maritime interests," "exercising national sovereignty in territorial waters," "conducting naval patrol operations," and "leading combat groups consisting of missile-launching fast attack boats." The presence of Jamaran has qualitatively enhanced the operational capability of the Iranian Navy, allowing Iran to possess the capability of a conventional and regular fleet alongside its asymmetric strategy (using small boats).
