NATO: Two US service members killed in Afghanistan
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has confirmed the death of two US service members in Afghanistan.
According to reports, the coalition's press office announced that the two US service members were killed while being on a NATO-led mission in Afghanistan on Wednesday. The office abstained to provide the press with any details about the place of their death. The identities of the troops were also not disclosed.
The incident brings to 16 the number of US forces killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2019.
Nearly 20,000 foreign troops, mostly Americans, remain in the war-torn country some 18 years after invading Afghanistan.
The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001, shortly after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. While the invasion ended the Taliban’s rule in the country, it has failed to eliminate the militant group. The Daesh terrorist group has also emerged in the Asian country more recently.
