The strike group of the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier conducted military exercises off the Korean Peninsula this week.

This follows 11 days of the largest land-based drills involving South Korea and the US in almost five years.

The US has increased joint drills with South Korea in the past year, particularly those involving nuclear capable weapons, so-called strategic assets.

North Korea protested the drills, test firing ballistic and cruise missiles as Pyongyang views such exercises as a rehearsal for invasion. The Nimitz drills were followed up with a massive joint US- South Korea amphibious landing exercise Wednesday. Activists argue such drills carry risks.
