Pars Today – Iran’s minister of energy reaffirmed on Tuesday that serious efforts are underway to secure the country’s water rights from the Helmand River and said negotiations have been initiated with Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan on water cooperation.

Speaking to reporters, Abbas Aliabadi said that multiple meetings were held on Monday regarding the Helmand water rights and the agreement with Turkmenistan to halt water extraction from the Doosti Dam in order to supply drinking water to the holy city of Mashhad during the summer.

He added that water negotiations with the aforementioned countries are ongoing and emphasized that technical talks will continue to ensure none of the Iranian people’s rights are compromised.

He also cited the "Tahlab Project" as one of several major water supply initiatives in the Sistan region of southern Iran.
