Sanae Takaichi, Japan's first female PM
Pars Today – Conservative politician Sanae Takaichi has been appointed Japan’s first female prime minister following a parliamentary vote of confidence.
Takaichi, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, secured 237 out of 465 votes in the House of Representatives. This historic appointment comes after the resignation of Shigeru Ishiba and the ruling party’s defeat in Japan’s recent elections.
Takaichi, who previously held ministerial positions including Economy, Internal Affairs, and Gender Equality, won the party’s internal leadership contest on October 4. However, her main challenge will be maintaining government stability, as the ruling coalition in the House of Councillors (Upper House) lacks a majority. This appointment is seen as a milestone for enhancing the role of women in Japanese politics. / IRNA
