Iran, S. Korea to discuss fish farming JV

South Korea says it plans to begin discussions with Iran on boosting bilateral cooperation in the fisheries sector.

According to the reports, the South Korean government has been quoted by the media in Seoul as announcing in a press release that the talks with Iran will also focus over the development of a joint fish farming venture. 

The talks will be held in Iran from Thursday involving officials from South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and their Iranian counterparts, announced South Korea’s Yonhap news agency in a report that was also carried by the English-language newspaper Korea Times. 

This, the report added, follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries to boost cooperation in the area of fisheries during the visit in May to Tehran by South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye. 

Iran is already the largest fish farming nation in the Middle East, annually producing some 325,000 tons of fishery products through farming, South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries added in its press release.

South Korea is the world's seventh-largest fish farmer. In 2015, Iran purchased 155,000 tons of fishery products, worth $21 million, from South Korea, the report added.
