Détente with Riyadh major step toward regional stability: Iran’s Qalibaf
Speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf hailed the restoration of diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia as an important step in ensuring stability in the Persian Gulf region.
According to Tasnim news agency, the senior Iranian lawmaker lauded the rapprochement between Tehran and Riyadh in a post on his Twitter account on Saturday.
“The revival of relations with Saudi Arabia is a major step towards stability in the region and the Persian Gulf and towards political and economic development in light of regional cooperation,” Qalibaf said.
He also expressed hope that Saudi Arabia would prove its goodwill in practice by avoiding interfering in the internal affairs of Iran and by making decisions in good faith about the regional issues, such as Lebanon, Yemen and Palestine.
Following days of intensive talks in Beijing, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed on Friday to resume their diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and diplomatic missions within the next two months.
