  • Leader gives clemency to over 2,000 Iranian prisoners

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei approved a proposal from Iran’s top judge to pardon or commute the prison terms of more than 2,000 convicts found guilty by various Iranian courts.

The pardon was granted on Monday on the occasion of the birth anniversaries of Prophet Muhammad (Blessings of God upon him and his progeny) and the sixth Shias' Imam, Imam Jafar Sadiq (PBUH).

Iran’s Judiciary Chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei had sent a letter to the Leader, proposing a list of 2,284 convicts deserving clemency.

The Leader regularly issues such decrees on the occasion of religious festivities.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

In April, on the occasion of the Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadhan, the Leader pardoned and commuted sentences for over 1,700 prisoners.

In February, Ayatollah Khamenei also agreed to pardon or reduce the sentences of those arrested during the foreign-backed riots that erupted in September 2022 following the death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini.

The Leader issued the approval on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the glorious victory of the Islamic Revolution, which put an end to the ruling of the US-backed Pahlavi regime in the country in 1979, and the birthday anniversary of Imam Ali (PBUH), the first Shias' Imam.
