The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognised the Family Health Project as an Iranian initiative that can help improve health care in societies around the world.

The WHO Regional Official for Europe has registered the innovative Family Health Project on behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran, following a speech by Minister of Health Bahram Einollahi at the Seventh Meeting of Health Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Einollahi, who is in Kazakhstan to attend a meeting of health ministers from SCO member states, added: "The family health project is considered the main health axis of Iranian society".

During the meeting, the minister said the SCO member states want academic cooperation and joint production and research in the fields of medicine and medical equipment with Iran, adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran has many achievements in the field of health care.

Meanwhile, the health minister said after the event that SCO member states welcome greater academic cooperation with Iran and synergy in the fields of medicine and medical equipment.

Under the national initiative, individuals are assigned a file based on their national code, and general practitioners record patients' medical conditions to be used for specialised care if needed.

Access to clean water and health care are key priorities in this programme.

In recent years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been considered by countries as one of the medical centres of the region due to the progress made in the field of health and treatment.

Iran's advances in medicine include being ranked among the top three countries in bone marrow transplants and infertility treatment, and fourth in the world in orthopedics and organ transplants.

Iran also ranks seventh in the world in the production of medicines needed for certain diseases and is among the top five countries in the world in the production of cochlear implants.
