Today, March 31st, corresponding to the 12th of Farvardin in the Iranian calendar, marks the "Day of the Islamic Republic", a true manifestation of the will and desire of the great Iranian nation in achieving national dignity and determining the fate of the country in the hands of the revolutionary people of Iran.

A day when, the great Iranian nation, witnessed the result of its struggles against the dictatorial.

In this article, we take a look at the referendum on establishing the Islamic Republic system in Iran after the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

1- Formation of the interim government:

On the 17th of Bahman, 1357 (1979), five days after Imam Khomeini's return to Iran, Mehdi Bazargan was tasked with forming an interim government by order of the Imam Khomeini (God bless his soul).

One of the duties of the interim government after the victory of the Islamic Revolution was to hold a referendum to determine the political system based on the people's vote. An event that remains unprecedented in world history.

2- Electing the Islamic Republic:

Finally, on the 10th and 11th of Farvardin, 1358, a referendum for accepting or rejecting the political system under the title of the Islamic Republic was held throughout Iran.

People's wide participation in the Islamic Republic referendum

Based on the results of this referendum announced on the twelfth of Farvardin, 1358 (April 1, 1979), over 98% of participants agreed to establish the Islamic Republic system in Iran.

On this occasion, the Farvardin 12th is named as the "Day of the Islamic Republic of Iran" in the Iranian calendar.

3- Message from Imam Khomeini:

In a message issued by Imam Khomeini (God bless his soul) on the occasion of this historic event and eternal epic of the Iranian nation, he stated: "The morning of Farvardin 12th, which is the day of the first government of 'God,' is one of our greatest religious and national festivals. Our nation must celebrate this day and keep it alive. A day when the castle of a 2500-year-old tyrannical regime collapsed, and satanic rule was forever defeated, and the government of the oppressed, which is God's government, took its place. Almighty God bestowed His favor upon us and toppled the regime of arrogance with His mighty hand, which is the immense power of the oppressed, and made our great nation leaders and pioneers of oppressed nations and by establishing the 'Islamic Republic,' bestowed upon them their rightful inheritance."

4. The Concept of Islamic Republic

With the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the Leader of the revolution, Imam Khomeini, raised the theory of mixing the rights of God with those of people in the form of a government, and presented it to the world which was welcomed by people and academic elite.

The word "republic" means the masses of people and choosing this word for a post-revolution system indicates its being popular and the effect of people's votes on their destiny.

The word "Islamic", too, distinguishes it from other republic systems and implies the rule of the divine and Qur'anic values in the parts of the system.

The votes of each and every individual is respected in the Islamic Republic system and the rulers, originated in ordinary masses, make efforts to materialize the Islamic ideals which guarantee the prosperity and happiness of society.

Imam Khamenei, who became the Leader of the Islamic Revolution after the passing of Imam Khomeini, clarifies "Islamic Republic" as follows, "Islamic Republic verbally stands on two bases: one is people as public, that is, each one of people and population of the country. These are the ones who determine the affairs of the country, the governmental establishment and administration. The other one is Islamic meaning that the people's move is based on the Islamic thought and religion. This is a natural thing. In a country where the majority of nearly all is Muslim- and that devoted, faithful and acting Muslims, and have proved their deep faith in Islam through the time- in such a country if the government is popular it is Islamic, too."

5. The Global Impact

The announcement of the establishment of the Islamic Republic ruling system in Iran on April 1, 1979 caused the sprouts of thought and action to grow and flourish among the downtrodden nations in the world.

In fact, the Islamic Revolution equipped them with the thought and strong will to build a new society on the basis of religion, while they had been frustrated with the Western and Communist models.

The world oppressed and deprived people realized that, with the support of religious-monotheistic teachings and national will like that of the Iranian nation, they could overcome problems and establish a popular desirable rule which is the very promise of triumph of the oppressed over the oppressors in the holy Book of Qur'an.
