Pars Today – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs emphasized that Tehran attaches no value to Europe’s hypocritical sanctions.

According to Pars Today, citing Tasnim News Agency, Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, said that the Council of the European Union had adopted so-called sanctions against several Iranian individuals and entities in connection with the Strait of Hormuz.

He noted that the member states of the European Union are themselves among the major violators of the rights of the Iranian people, and that the EU has deliberately remained silent regarding the U.S. maritime blockade against Iran, which is an act of war.

Gharibabadi added that Iran is not a party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and that the legal regime Iran applies in the Strait of Hormuz is based on the principle of “innocent passage” under customary international law, while taking into account the coastal state's maritime safety and security considerations.

He stressed that Iran attaches no value to Europe’s political and hypocritical action and will continue its strategy of safeguarding its sovereignty and exercising its sovereign rights in the Strait of Hormuz.
