Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, on Wednesday granted audience to President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and emphasized the role of religion in the development and progress of society.

According to Press TV, he emphasized the necessity of boosting of ties between the countries, which are historically linked to each other, saying: These fraternal relations face some hurdles and the two sides should resolutely stand against any divisive and destructive measures by developing their ties and cooperation in various fields.

The Leader, referring to the fact that the overwhelming majority of the population of the Republic of Azerbaijan are followers of the Blessed Ahl al-Bayt or Household of Prophet Mohammad (SAWA), similar to the populations of Iran and Iraq, asserted, “This factor and the glorious mourning ceremonies the people of the Republic of Azerbaijan held in this year’s Ashura (Muharram 10) for the Chief of Martyrs, Imam Husain (AS), presents an excellent opportunity to promote the real identity of the nation and the country.” 

Ayatollah Khamenei said the real reason for the failure of the Soviet Union to promote communism in the Republic of Azerbaijan and eliminate religion was the strong faith of the people.

President Ilham Aliyev for his part said when visiting Iran he feels he is at home. On the promotion of cooperation between two countries, he added, “we are firm in our relation with Iran and we won’t let anyone to interfere in the relations of the two countries.”

Aliyev also said: “we are strengthening our economic and cultural relation with Iran and are determined to make these relations stable and lasting.”
