Special attention to powerful North-South corridor in Qalibaf-Putin talks
Pars Today- Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis), after returning from the BRICS inter-parliamentary summit hosted by Moscow, said, "The bilateral issues of Iran and Russia were pursued during the meeting with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, the speaker of the Russian parliament (Duma) and the chairman of the Russian Federation Council."
According to Pars Today, Qalibaf made it clear, "The North-South corridor and cooperation in the field of energy were among the issues that were pursued."
Qalibaf stating that during the Russian chairmanship, many of the Central Asian countries took part in the BRICS summit, added, "The BRICS member states comprise more than half of the world population and %30 of the global economic capacity. These countries are creating parallel institutions of financial messenger systems such as SWIFT. The bilateral dealings of BRICS are done with currencies other than dollar. Most of the important Eurasian economic powers are members of BRICS."
The Iranian speaker went on to say, "As for BRICS, economy is not the only discussed issue and cultural, athletic and scientific issues are also discussed. During this summit, bilateral issues with countries like Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Belarus were also pursued."
Qalibaf, pointing to the sanctions of Washington against Iran, added, "Among the most important issues discussed in BRICS were the US unilateral sanctions which are not approved by the international laws."
It should be noted that BRICS is composed of the newfound economic powers such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The Islamic Republic of Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Egypt, too, joined the group on January 1, 2024. In 2018, the nominal GDP composition of this group was approximately $57 trillion.
