Peru unrest: Protesters set fire to police station after more killings
Protesters in Peru have set fire to a police station and judicial office after two people were killed and another was seriously injured by security forces, as the country continues to see some of its worst political crisis in recent decades.
According to Press TV, protesters took to the streets in the Peruvian town of Macusani on Wednesday and have set fire to a police station. The incident occurred after police killed two people by gunfire.
Macusani health official Dr. Iván Fernández confirmed the deaths, which brought to 53 the number of people killed during more than a month of unrest that was sparked by the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo last month.
Some of Peru’s most intense protests have taken place in the south of the country, where dozens of people were killed in violent clashes with security forces.
Protesters have in recent days started to travel toward the capital, Lima, from rural regions to demand that the current President, Dina Boluarte, step down. Besides Boluarte’s resignation, they demand better living conditions, which they say they have been deprived of in the last two decades.
They are also demanding the closure of congress and immediate elections.
