Pars Today — Opposition from several Arab countries to the former UK Prime Minister’s role in the Iraq War has led to his removal from the initial lineup of the Gaza board of peace by Donald Trump.

Informed sources reported that Tony Blair, the former British Prime Minister and the first and only individual nominated for the “Gaza board of peace” under Trump’s 20-point plan, has been removed from key consideration due to objections from some Arab and Muslim countries. According to Pars Today, citing Fars News Agency, the U.S. President had proposed that this commission would help shape the governance structure following the Gaza conflict.

Why was Blair removed?

After Trump unveiled his 20-point Gaza peace plan in late September, he described Blair as a “very good man,” and Blair in response called the plan “bold and smart,” expressing his willingness to cooperate. However, several Arab countries emphasized that Blair’s strong support for the 2003 Iraq War has damaged his standing in the Arab world, and his presence could be controversial. Additionally, some critics are concerned that Palestinians themselves might be marginalized within the governance structure proposed by Trump.

According to UK media reports, Trump had implicitly acknowledged the possibility of objections in October, stating that he wanted to ensure Blair’s appointment would be acceptable to everyone. Blair’s office has not issued an official response to the news, but a source close to him confirmed that he will not be a member of the Gaza board of peace, which will be composed of current leaders.

The informed source added that Blair will likely participate as a member of the executive committee alongside Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, and several Arab and Western representatives. Another source noted that “another role for him is possible, as both Americans and Israelis favor him.”

What is the current stage of Trump’s plan?

The Gaza war-ending plan, announced alongside a fragile ceasefire, has seen no significant progress for over two months. Other members of the peace commission were supposed to be introduced within a few days, but no names have been announced so far. Nevertheless, Trump claims that the implementation process is progressing well, and he has suggested that it will soon enter a second phase, with the possibility of announcing the full composition of the commission.

Who will replace Blair?

According to some reports, Nikolay Mladenov, former UN envoy and former defense minister of Bulgaria, is set to head the “Gaza Executive Management Committee.” The Trump administration claims that this committee will serve as a liaison between the peace board and the Palestinian technocrats’ committee, which is intended to manage the day-to-day administration of the Gaza Strip. Despite the political structure being designed, many uncertainties remain, and contrary to pressure from the Trump administration, Hamas has so far not agreed to lay down its weapons.
