ParsToday - A US lawmaker, while explicitly opposing the escalation of tensions against Iran, emphasized that the authority to declare war rests exclusively with Congress and that the US President does not have such a right.

According to a ParsToday report citing IRNA, Dwight Evans, a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives, announced in a message on the social media platform X early Saturday that he opposes the actions of US President Donald Trump to escalate tensions against Iran. Referring to the principles of the US Constitution, he stated: "I strongly oppose Trump's dangerous escalation of tensions against Iran. Congress has the right to declare war, not the President." These remarks come at a time when some political circles in Washington are seeking to increase pressure and adopt confrontational approaches toward Iran.

Evans also expressed support for a proposal introduced by Ro Khanna, a Democratic representative from California, to present a bipartisan war powers resolution; a measure designed to limit the President's unilateral actions in matters of war and prevent the escalation of tensions against Iran. He emphasized that he would support this resolution to "curb escalatory actions."

In the same context, Thomas Massie, a Republican representative from Kentucky, also announced in a message: "Congress must vote on war according to the Constitution." He added that he, along with Ro Khanna, seeks to hold this vote in the House of Representatives as soon as possible and clarified that his vote signifies opposition to further war in the West Asia region.

In recent days, a significant number of US lawmakers have warned about the domestic and international consequences of escalatory policies against Iran. They believe that escalating tensions against Iran could undermine regional stability and impose heavy costs on the American people; an issue that once again revealed a serious rift within Washington's political structure regarding the confrontational approach toward Iran.
