Joint Qatar-Pakistan statement on Iran-US talks in Switzerland
Pars Today – Qatar and Pakistan said in a joint statement that progress had been made toward establishing a mechanism for technical negotiations between Iran and the United States.
According to Pars Today, citing IRIB News Agency, Qatar and Pakistan, as mediators in the Iran-US talks in Switzerland, referred in a joint statement to the discussions and agreements reached during the latest round of negotiations. The statement reads:
“The first round of high-level talks under the framework of the ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ was concluded in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, with the participation of representatives from the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States of America, and the two mediating parties — the government of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The first day of the Lake Lucerne meeting was held in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Promising progress was achieved, including the establishment of a mechanism for continuing technical discussions.”
Under the memorandum of understanding, the parties agreed to establish a “High Committee” responsible for political oversight of the mediation process. Senior negotiators will regularly report to the committee and will oversee working groups focused on nuclear issues, sanctions, as well as monitoring and dispute resolution, to ensure the effective implementation of the memorandum and address other related matters.
The High Committee has agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within 60 days, paving the way for the immediate start of further technical discussions. In addition, for the period specified in Article 5 of the memorandum, a communication channel has been established between the parties to prevent incidents and misunderstandings and to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
The parties also agreed to establish a “conflict control unit” between themselves and the Lebanese government, with the facilitation of mediators, to ensure compliance with the cessation of military operations in Lebanon in accordance with the provisions of the memorandum.
Technical discussions on all issues will continue through the end of the week at the Bürgenstock complex.
The mediating parties said they would continue their maximum efforts to ensure that the negotiations proceed in a constructive atmosphere and that the goal of reaching a final agreement is achieved.
The government of Qatar and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan expressed their sincere appreciation to the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their continued commitment to diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of the dispute. The mediators also thanked partners and allies for their ongoing support and valuable contributions to the current negotiation process.
