US Secretary of State John Kerry says Iran deserves access to the US financial system because it has met its obligations under the nuclear agreement.

Kerry was asked Tuesday during an interview on MSNBC about the recent effort by the Obama administration to give Iran limited access to the dollar currency.

"It’s fair for Iran to get what it deserves because it kept its part of the bargain to date, with respect to the nuclear agreement."

"We’ve in fact tried to work to make sure that the banks that are supposed to be doing legitimate business with respect to the transactions that are okay after the agreement, that they’re operating," the top US diplomat added.

“Iran deserves the benefits of the agreement they struck. And President Obama has said it, I’ve said it, US [Treasury] Secretary [Jack] Lew has said it.”

Kerry’s remarks come after the US undersecretary of state for political affairs, Thomas Shannon, said the White House is not planning to allow Iran to access its financial system or use the US dollar for transactions as part of sanctions relief.
