The costs of the election campaigns of two US presidential hopefuls, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, are equivalent to maximum monthly expenses of 142,000 poor single-parent families in the US.

The figures released in the US reveal a number of facts. The US maintains the third largest economy in the world. Nonetheless, 47 million Americans are mired in poverty, which constitute 15% of the US population.

Moreover, only 35% of poor American children are capable of joining the middle class stratum in their adulthood. For instance, in the year 2013, one third of 15.6 million single-mom families lived below the poverty line in the US.

However, the rate of poverty among families whose breadwinners are single African-American mothers stands at 42.5%.
