Pointing to Iran’s leading role in the region, the foreign minister of Belgium called for the continuation of contacts with the Islamic Republic.
According to Tasnim news agency, in a telephone conversation with her Iranian counterpart on Tuesday, Hadja Lahbib highlighted Iran’s role in the region and the significance of the history of relations between Brussels and Tehran.
She stated that continued contacts with Iran and familiarity with the realities on the ground would play an important role in developing a correct understanding of the developments.
For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian described the age-old relations between the two countries as a good basis for the continuation of interaction and constructive dialogue.
He also welcomed the promotion of political, economic and cultural cooperation between Iran and Belgium on the basis of mutual respect and interests.
The two senior diplomats also talked about a series of main topics in the relations between Tehran and Brussels, including consular affairs.
In a meeting with Lahbib on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September, Amir-Abdollahian had voiced Iran’s readiness to finalize a number of basic cooperation documents with Belgium, including the maritime transportation agreement, double taxation avoidance agreement, and document on supporting mutual investment.
