Pars Today - Iran’s religious minorities, along with the rest of their compatriots, flocked to the polling booths on Friday March 1 to vote for candidates of their choice from their own communities as representatives for the 12th 4-year term of the Majlis – as the parliament or Islamic Consultative Assembly is known.

According to the Islamic Republic’s constitution, Iran’s religious minorities enjoy equal rights and freedom like all other citizens within the framework of national laws, and are free to follow and practice their rites and rituals. They have their own places of worship.

According to Article 64 of the Constitution, each religious minority sect is allowed to elect one person to the parliament.

Ara Shaverdian, who represented the Northern Armenian Christians in the 11th Parliament, retained his seat as a MP by a majority of 80% of the votes.
