Why is 13th of Aban called "Student Day" in Iran?
Pars Today - Student Day in Iran falls on 13th of Aban (November 3). The reason for this naming is that it reminds of murdering a number of the students in Tehran who had gathered at the campus of Tehran University in 1978 to protest the Pahlavi regime which was supported by the West.
According to Pars Today, on November 3, 1978, 56 students from different schools in Tehran were martyred by the agents of Pahlavi regime. After the victory of the Islamic Revolution, this day has been named as "Student Day" to commemorate the students who were ruthlessly martyred just for protesting the American-backed regime.
Events of November 3, 1978
As the Islamic Revolution was nearing fateful days under the leadership of Imam Khomeini, Iranian men, women, young and old, from all walks of life, tried to fulfill their divine duty and historical role. Meanwhile, students and teenagers were very fervent.
In the morning of November 3, 1978, students closed schools and walked towards Tehran University to protest the regime. These students entered the university in groups and, together with university students and other people, converged in the campus.
At 11 a.m. military agents of regime threw tear gas to disperse the crowd, but people chanted Allahu Akbar louder though it was difficult for them to breathe. This frightened the soldiers and they started shooting and murdering students one after another. Thus, 56 students were martyred and hundreds of others were injured in this event.
Students have always played active and unforgettable role in fighting Arrogance
At that time, Imam Khomeini (God's mercy upon him) issued a message from exile and said, "… Be patient my dear ones, as final victory is near and God is with the patient… Today, Iran is the place of the free… I have pinned hope in you from a far distance… I will convey your voice of freedom-seeking and independence-seeking to the world people."
