What is Iran’s share of global scientific production?
Pars Today – Iran is today one of the key players in global scientific production.
International data, including from reputable databases such as Scopus and Web of Science, show that over the past two decades, the Islamic Republic of Iran has achieved a prominent position in global science. According to Pars Today, Iranian researchers publish tens of thousands of articles annually in leading international journals, placing Iran among the world’s top twenty scientific powers.
According to statistics published in the Scimago Journal Rank (SJR), more than 375 Iranian scientific journals in the fields of medicine, engineering, basic sciences, and humanities are indexed in international databases. This extensive presence reflects the continuous efforts of Iran’s scientific community to enhance the country’s standing in global knowledge production.
Data from Iran’s National Science Foundation also indicate that the country’s scientific output has been on an upward trajectory in recent years. In 2020 alone, more than 1,782 articles supported by the foundation were published in international databases. These figures show that Iran has been able to continue its scientific development strongly, despite political and economic constraints.
In this context, Hojjatoleslam Mostafa Rostami, head of the Office of the Leader’s Representative in Iranian Universities, stated that Iran’s scientific momentum today has grown twentyfold compared to the period before the Islamic Revolution, reaching nearly 2%. This means that out of every 100 scientific articles published worldwide, approximately two are produced by Iranian researchers.
