Pars Today — Iran's Foreign Minister has stated that today, sanctions have been transformed from diplomatic tools into weapons for economic warfare and pressure on developing and independent nations.

According to Pars Today, quoting IRNA, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, said on Thursday, May 15, at the second meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers: The current political system is in need of revision. Today, the Security Council is a clear symbol of inefficiency and imbalance, and a glaring example of this inefficiency is its silence in the face of the imposed and aggressive war by the United States and the Zionist regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran's Foreign Minister noted: Today, sanctions have been transformed from diplomatic tools into weapons for economic warfare and pressure on developing and independent nations. The instrumental use of laws, the imposition of unilateral sanctions, and the disregard for the rights and national sovereignty of countries are signs of a deep crisis in global governance. This approach, based solely on power, not only does not guarantee peace but is also the root cause of regional and global tensions.

He emphasized: The principle of non-resort to force, as a shining and central principle in the UN Charter and a human achievement born from the bitter experiences of world wars, is now facing a serious challenge from the United States. Illegal and unilateral wars waged by this country have shaken the foundations of the international order — which had already been brought to the brink of collapse through the erosion of justice and multilateralism — and have now mixed it with savagery and brutality.

Araghchi also said that in such circumstances, the ideal of Global South multilateralism — upon which BRICS is founded and in which it is embodied — is more essential and vital than ever for respecting international law, the UN Charter, and global governance. BRICS members consider themselves committed to implementing and defending the principles of this Charter.

Araghchi emphasized: The BRICS group, representing a large portion of the world's population and economy, has unparalleled potential to become the backbone of genuine multilateralism. Our cooperation in economic, financial, and technological fields can reduce dependence on monopolistic structures and create new space for independence and sustainable development. BRICS can serve as a model of cooperation based on mutual respect and shared benefit. The time has come to move from 'crisis management' to 'structural management.
