  • Iranian Sina, from breaking monopoly of American robotic surgeon to presence in global markets

Pars Today- Sina robotic surgery system made in Iran is one of the most advanced surgery systems in the world. This robotic system was unveiled in 2015 on the sidelines of Inotex (International Innovation and Technology Competition) in Tehran.

Iranian engineers, with designing and manufacturing of this robot, entered the domain of medical engineering which is among the highest levels of technology. Before making of this robot by the Iranian scientists, da Vinci, made in the US, was the only commercial robotic surgeon in the world.

The name of this robot has been derived from the name of the great renowned Iranian scientist and physician, Abu Ali Sina (Avicenna).

Performance of Sina robotic surgeon

Sina robotic surgery system has been manufactured with the cooperation of the biomechanics group of Sharif University and the Center for Biomedical and Robotic Technologies of Modern Medical Technologies Research Center affiliated to Tehran Medical Sciences University. It is composed of two main parts of remote surgery console and robotic surgeons imbedded beside the patient.

The surgery console includes two manipulating robots and control foot pedals which, the surgeon sitting behind them, can see the images sent from the operation spot and manipulates surgical devices and imaging camera from a distance. Meanwhile, three subordinate robots including two robots carrying devices and an imaging robot, imbedded beside the patient implement the orders of the surgeon. During the operation, the movements of the surgeon's hands are received by the manipulating robots and, after omitting of vibrations and scaling, are transferred to subordinate robots to be implemented at the operation spot with high precision. The relation between the subordinate robots beside the patient with the manipulating robots in the surgery console is established via telecommunication structures from a distance like internet. Thus, surgery operation can be done in the remotest regions of the country or even on an ocean liner.

Presence in the global markets

The first export cargo of Sina robot is the Flex model which was exported to Indonesia in 2021.

Exporting Sina surgery robot to Indonesia took place while, earlier, this country had bought the American remote surgery robot da Vinci.

Currently, da Vinci robot is not applicable in Indonesia due to a very high consumption cost and it is not used for surgery operations. That's why the Indonesian surgeons, who have the experience of surgery with da Vinci, were astonished when they saw Sina robot and welcomed it.

According to the announcement of Iran's Minister of Health and Medical Education, Bahram Einollahi, Indonesia is inclined to equip many of its hospitals under construction with the facilities and equipment produced in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Regarding the international welcome for this product, there have been spectacular successes and proper infrastructural relations have been created for arrival in the global markets. Among these successes, mention can be made of conclusion of an agreement for the joint production of this system with the Russian Central Institute of Research and Development in robotic and cybernetic technologies (RTC). According to this agreement, Sina robot is going to be semi-assembled in Iran and will be exported to Russia as SKD to be assembled in Saint Petersburg.

The Iranian-Russian company, which is going to be set up in Russia, is responsible for getting of necessary permissions, marketing, sale and post-sale service of this system in Russia and the field of CIS.

As for the European markets, too, according to the letter of understanding with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), very good links have been formed and Sina company has been registered as the industrial partner of the said university.
