The ISIL has drowned a dozen Iraqi children and their mothers in Tigris River as they were trying to escape from the terrorist group in northern Iraq, media reports said.

At least 12 Iraqi civilians most of them children and women were drowned by the ISIL in the Tigris River as they intended to escape to the newly-liberated bank of Tigris River in al-Shirqat region, the Arabic-language al-Sumeria news channel quoted an unnamed Iraqi security source as saying on Sunday.

The eastern side of al-Shirqat region in Salahuddin Province is still under ISIL's control and Iraqi security forces are preparing for massive operations in eastern Shirqat.

The Iraqi security forces seized back the Western side of al-Shirqat on September 20.

In a relevant development in early June, the ISIL 13 Iraqi civilians in the Euphrates River as they intended to flee.
