Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif blasted foreign interference in Venezuela's internal affairs, stressing Tehran's support for political talks between the government of Nicolas Maduro and the opposition.

Zarif made the remarks in a meeting with Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister Ruben Dario Molina in Tehran on Sunday.

During the meeting, both sides lashed out at the US interference in Venezuela and other Latin American countries' internal affairs and its threats to use force against Venezuela in violation of the international laws and the UN Charter, stressing that such attempts are doomed to failure.

Molina, for his part, presented a report on the latest political situation in Venezuela, appreciating Tehran for its assistance to improve the political situation in the country.

Venezuela has been rocked by protests since January 10, when President Nicolas Maduro was sworn in for a second term following a vote boycotted by the opposition.

Tensions rose when Juan Guaido, who heads Venezuela's National Assembly, declared himself acting president on January 23, a move which was supported by Washington and many European and Latin American countries.

Russia, Turkey, China, Iran, Bolivia and Mexico are among the other nations that have put their weight behind Maduro.
