Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy for Legal and International Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Pars Today – The Deputy for Legal and International Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that activating the “snapback” mechanism would affect Iran’s engagement with the IAEA.
According to Pars Today, citing IRNA, Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy for Legal and International Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on Wednesday after returning from the latest round of Iran–European Troika talks in Geneva that, in this round of negotiations, Iran clearly explained that the Europeans are not legally in a position to activate the snapback mechanism and that there is no legal basis for their actions.
Gharibabadi emphasized that the prospects and countermeasures Iran would take if the three European countries attempt to misuse this process are clear to the other side. He stated that Iran stressed to Europe that the choice is theirs: they can either take a confrontational path or engage in dialogue and cooperation. This approach allows the Europeans to make decisions after carefully reviewing the outcomes of the meeting. He added that Iran is prepared for both scenarios — for cooperation and engagement, as well as, if they seek to abuse this legal mechanism and Resolution 221, Iran will naturally respond, the scope of which has already been outlined. He expressed hope that Europe will act wisely.
