Imam Khamenei: U.S. Embassy takeover revealed true identity of American government
Pars Today – Imam Khamenei, addressing thousands of students from across Iran, stated that the takeover of the U.S. Embassy revealed the true identity of the American government.
Thousands of school students, university students, and a group of families of martyrs of the 12-day imposed war by the Zionist regime against Iran met with Imam Khamenei, the Leader of the Revolution, on the eve of the anniversary of the takeover of the U.S. Embassy — considered the center of plotting and conspiracies against the Islamic Revolution — on November 4, 1979.
According to Pars Today, quoting the official website of Leader's office, Ayatollah Khamenei described this day as a day of “pride and victory” and a day when “the true identity of the arrogant American government was exposed.”
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, emphasizing the need to preserve this day in the national memory, explained the history of U.S. hostility toward the Iranian nation and stressed: The dispute between the Islamic Republic and the United States is fundamental — a clash of interests between the American establishment and the Islamic Republic. Only if the United States fully ends its support for the accursed Zionist regime, removes its military bases from the region, and refrains from interfering in regional affairs, then — not in the near future but possibly much later — any U.S. request to cooperate with Iran could be considered.
Referring to the Quranic origin of the term “arrogance”, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution defined it as a sense of self-superiority and said: Sometimes an individual or a government considers itself superior but does not encroach upon the interests of others — in such cases, it does not provoke hostility. However, at times — like Britain during a certain period and today the United States — they assume the right to intrude upon the vital interests of nations, dictate their fate, establish military bases in countries where the government is weak and the people are not alert, or plunder nations’ oil and resources. This is the kind of arrogance we oppose and raise slogans against.
Imam Khamenei, outlining the history of U.S. hostility toward the Iranian nation, said: After the Constitutional Revolution, for nearly 40 years Iran was either caught in chaos and instability, or faced foreign interference, or subjected to the harsh tyranny and ruthless dictatorship of Reza Khan. Then, around 1950–1951, by God’s grace, Dr. Mossadegh’s national government came to power, stood up against the British, and succeeded in nationalizing the country’s oil, which had practically been in their hands almost for free.
The Leader pointed to the plots of Britain and its allies to undermine Mossadegh’s government, and reminded that Mossadegh’s naïveté and negligence in seeking help from the United States to get rid of Britain was a mistake. He added: The Americans smiled at Mossadegh, but from behind the scenes, in collaboration with the British, they orchestrated a coup, overthrew the national government, and brought the fugitive Shah back to Iran.
The Leader described the overthrow of the national government as a severe blow to the Iranian nation and added: Our nation came to recognize America, its arrogant nature, and the danger it poses through the coup of August 19, 1953. After the coup and the Shah’s return, 25 years of harsh and brutal dictatorship under Mohammad Reza Shah continued — with the support and assistance of the United States.
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution described the first confrontation between the United States and the Islamic Revolution as the hostile resolution passed by the U.S. Senate. He noted that public anger was sparked when Mohammad Reza Shah was allowed into the United States, and added: The Iranian nation felt that by hosting Mohammad Reza, the Americans were seeking to repeat the 1953 coup and prepare the ground for his return to Iran. Therefore, the people, filled with anger, took to the streets — and part of these demonstrations and popular movements, with the presence of students, led to the takeover of the U.S. Embassy.
The Leader said that the students’ initial intention was to remain in the embassy for only two or three days, simply to reflect the anger of the Iranian people to the world, and noted: But the students found documents inside the embassy that revealed the depth of the situation was far greater than imagined, and that the U.S. Embassy was a center of plotting and scheming to destroy the Revolution.
Imam Khamenei considered the interpretation of the embassy takeover as the origin of U.S.–Iran problems to be inaccurate, and noted: Our problem with the United States began on August 19, 1953 — not on November 4, 1979. Moreover, the takeover of the embassy led to the discovery of a major plot and a serious danger against the Revolution. By carrying out this important action and piecing together the documents, the students were able to expose the nature of that conspiracy.
The Leader of the Islamic Revolution described as distortion of history the remarks made by those who claim that chanting “Death to America” is the reason for U.S. hostility toward the Iranian nation. He added: This slogan is not something for which the United States would confront our nation in such a way. The issue America has with the Islamic Republic is a fundamental incompatibility and a clash of interests.
Imam Khamenei, referring to a question raised by some people — “We did not surrender to the United States, but does that mean we will never have relations with it?” — stated: First, the arrogant nature of the United States accepts nothing but submission. This has been the intention of all U.S. presidents, though they did not express it openly — but the current president stated it explicitly and, in fact, revealed the true nature of America.
