Pars Today – The Israeli side is in shock following the ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which confirmed their suspension from international competitions.
On Tuesday, CAS upheld the ban on Israeli gymnasts from participating in the Jakarta World Championships.
According to Pars Today, Artem Dolgopyat, the Israeli world champion, expressed his shock and sadness following the ruling, saying, “I am very shocked and upset.”
This display of victimhood by the Israeli athlete comes as Israel, over a 24-month period of war against Gaza, has killed 950 Palestinian athletes and violated all international sports regulations.
Earlier, the Indonesian government, hosting the World Gymnastics Championships, decided to cancel the visas of seven Israeli athletes following widespread public protests in support of Palestine. After this major sporting setback, the Israeli side filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but the court rejected Israel’s case.
The Tokyo Olympic champion claimed that Indonesia’s action was “political,” but under the rules of world championships and international sports organizations, athletes representing a regime accused of genocide should not be allowed to compete freely in international competitions. According to One Israel website, CAS delivered a major shock to Israeli sports, and this historic ban could have long-term repercussions for the future of sports in the country.
Israeli anthem booed; World Cup ends for the regime
Meanwhile, the Israeli national football team, visiting Italy on Tuesday night under heavy security measures, had its anthem booed by fans before the match, despite the limited number of spectators. The Udine stadium has a capacity of 26,000, but due to widespread protests by Italians against Israel, UEFA allowed only 10 percent of the stadium’s capacity to be filled for security reasons.
Italy defeated Israel 3-0, dashing the latter’s hopes of participating in the World Cup.
According to Rai Sport, Israel’s genocide in Gaza has made its national football team widely unpopular across Europe. Gazzetta dello Sport reported that the most heavily secured World Cup qualifying match was held with the presence of Mossad agents and the Italian military. Nevertheless, around 10,000 Italians protested outside the stadium, sending a strong message to the world.
