Guterres: U.S. unilateral hegemony is in decline

Pars Today – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the military aggression against Iran has exposed the limitations of superpowers’ dominance.

According to Pars Today, citing IRIB, Guterres described in an interview with the British newspaper Financial Times, published Tuesday, a world undergoing change as a result of the decline of unilateral U.S. hegemony and the harsh lessons of “wars of choice”—conflicts in which the superpowers of the Cold War era have failed to achieve decisive victories.

Guterres stressed that the era of superpowers using force to impose outcomes on the world is coming to an end.

Saying that reform of the UN Security Council is “inevitable,” he told the Financial Times: “It is time for superpowers to understand the limitations of their power. If you look at what has happened in recent times, the ability of superpowers to impose their will, power, or force in different situations has been severely constrained.”

Referring to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, Guterres said: “Look at what happened between the United States and Iran. The United States hoped that Tehran would surrender when it attacked in February, but six months later, Iran is resisting and the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important energy waterway, is closed. Therefore, superpowers need to understand that circumstances have changed and that the weight of different countries has also shifted.”
