Indian forces have reportedly killed six militants in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir, as tensions and fatalities rise in the region.

A report by New Delhi Television (NDTV) said on Sunday that an Indian soldier had died and six militants had been killed in an exchange of fire in the Shopian district of Indian-administered Kashmir.

Local Indian media had earlier reported an encounter between Indian soldiers and militants early on Sunday.

The recent clash between Indian troops and militants was the third deadly encounter in less than a week.

On Friday, Indian soldiers killed six militants in the Himalayan region.

Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed region located between India and Pakistan. The two nuclear-armed rivals have fought four wars since their partition in 1947, three of them over Kashmir.

New Delhi has deployed hundreds of thousands of special military and police forces to crack down on protesters opposed to New Delhi’s rule over the Muslim region.

The so-called Line of Control (LoC) separates the Indian-controlled region from the Pakistani-administered section of Kashmir.
