Let's Know Islam (211)
Welcome to this week's episode of the series Let's Know Islam. Today, we continue to discuss the scale for calculation of one's record of conduct on the Day of Resurrection.
In the 8th ayah of Surat al-A'raf in Holy Quran, God has referred to this scale, noting: "The weighing of deeds on that Day is the truth."
So in the Day of Judgement, the scale based on which deeds are assessed is the truth.
As a reminder, last week it was pointed out that the scale for assessment of the deeds of mankind on the Day of Judgement are the Prophets, Imams, and righteous individuals; those who have a clean slate. In a number of narrations, the scale for assessment of deeds has been named as justice. These apparently different definitions in fact add up, because divine prophets and infallible Imams are the complete symbols of righteousness and justice. For this reason, on the Day of Judgement, individuals are compared with the divine prophets and Infallible Imams.
The 8th and 9th ayahs of Surat al-A'raf in Holy Quran note: "…As for those whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales – it is they who are the felicitous. As for those whose deeds weigh light in the scales, it is they who have ruined their souls, because they used to wrong Our signs."
In accordance to this ayahs, those whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales are those who are saved. But, those whose deeds weight light in the scales have in fact ruined their souls. Thus, such individuals have suffered a huge loss.
The 6th to 11th ayahs of Surat al-Qari'ah in Holy Quran note: "As for him whose deeds weigh heavy in the scales, he will have a pleasing life. But as for him whose deeds weigh light in the scales, his home will be the Abyss. And what will show you what it is? It is a scorching fire!"
The 105th ayah of Surat al-Kahf in Holy Quran notes: "They are the ones who deny the signs of their Lord and the encounter with Him. So their works have failed. On the Day of Resurrection, We will not set for them any weight."
As it was mentioned, individuals' record of conduct is weighed on the Day of Judgement and on that day, God calculates everyone's deeds. But, one of the other reckoners on that day is one's own conscience.
The 14th ayah of Surat al-Isra in Holy Quran states: "Read your book! Today your soul suffices as your own reckoner."
Meanwhile, God's judgement about mankind's deeds on the Day of Resurrection is absolutely precise and just.
In the 16th ayah of Surat Luqman in Holy Quran, Luqman advises his son, telling him: "'O my son! Even if it should be the weight of a mustard seed, and even though it should be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, Allah will produce it. Indeed, Allah is all-attentive, all-aware."
The descriptions of these ayahs about judgement on the Day of Resurrection show that even the minutest deeds of mankind are taken into account on the Day of Judgement.
Another aspect of the calculation and consideration of individuals' deeds on the Day of Judgement is their inner motivations and intentions. In different countries around the world, rules and regulations only take into consideration and issue verdicts for conducted deeds and do not consider the intentions and incentives of individuals in their deeds. However, the divine religion of Islam even takes into account the nature of one's intentions and motivations.
In the 284th ayah of Surat al-Baqarah in Holy Quran, God notes: "…and whether you disclose what is in your hearts or hide it, Allah will bring you to account for it."
Meanwhile, the issue of one's intentions and motivations is not related to a specific time or location.
On the Day of Judgement, mankind is questioned about the blessings which have been bestowed by God Almighty upon him.
The 8th ayah of Surat al-Takathur in Holy Quran notes: "Then, that day, you will surely be questioned concerning the blessing."
On the Day of Judgement, mankind should point out what he has done with the divine blessings bestowed upon him? Has he made the best of these divine blessings or has he squandered these blessings?
The fact of the matter is that blessings are valuable assets which God has bestowed upon mankind, and individuals should make the best of these divine blessings and be grateful for them.
