Let's Know Islam (216)
Welcome to this week's episode of the series Let's Know Islam. Today, in continuation of our discussion about the Day of Resurrection, we discuss Hell and Heaven.
Based on the ayahs of Holy Quran, humans will ultimately end up in Heaven or Hell. Good doers will become the inhabitants of Heaven, while wrongdoers will be the inmates of Fire. One of the conditions which sinner suffer from on the Day of Judgement is blindness.
The 124th to 126th ayahs of Surat Taha in Holy Quran note: But whoever disregards My remembrance, his shall be a wretched life, and on the Day of Resurrection We shall raise him blind. He will say, 'My Lord! Why have you raised me blind, though I used to see?' He will say: 'So it is. Our signs came to you, but you forgot them, and thus you will be forgotten today.'
As it was said, all of the realities of this world will be reflected at Hereafter, in some form or another. Those, who are incapable of sensing the realities of this world, will be raised blind on the Day of Resurrection.
Undoubtedly, righteousness can be spotted across the world. Meanwhile, vigilance and awareness is needed to see and observe the signs and manifestations of God Almighty, worldwide; to learn lessons from history; and to contemplate about the disgraceful fate of wrongdoers and sinners. Those who turn a blind eye to the realities of the mortal world; will be raised blind on the Day of Resurrection.
One of the other conditions of the inmates of Fire on that day is despair, and shamefulness.
The 12th ayah of Surat al-Sajdah in Holy Quran states: Were you to see when the guilty hang their heads before their Lord confessing, 'Our Lord! We have seen and heard. Send us back so that we may act righteously. Indeed, we are now convinced.'
On the Day of Resurrection, sinners and wrongdoers hang their heads before their Lord, given that at that point, they realize their sins. These ashamed individuals are those, who were conceited and rebellious in the mortal world and refused to accept the material world's realities. However, they completely change their stance upon observing the scenes of the Day of Judgement.
Upon observation of their situation on the Day of Resurrection, sinners and evildoers plead to God to return them to the mortal world so that they would carry out good deeds in requital for the sins which they committed in the material world. Upon observing the consequences of their misdeeds, they become convinced that the mortal world raised the best opportunity for them to be saved and to attain prosperity in Hereafter. However, they eventually come to realize that that they have burned the bridges before them, and are at the point of no return.
The other issue that should be discussed is the countenance of good doers and sinners on the Day of Judgement.
The 26th and 27th ayahs of Surat Yunus in Holy Quran note: "Those who are virtuous shall receive the best reward and an enhancement. Neither dust nor abasement, shall overcast their faces. They shall be the inhabitants of paradise, and they shall remain in it forever. For those who have committed misdeeds, the requital of a misdeed shall be its like, and they shall be overcast by abasement. They shall have no one to protect them from Allah. They will be as if their faces were covered with dark patches of the night. They shall be the inmates of the Fire, and they shall remain in it forever."
The best and most comprehensive source for familiarization with Heaven and Hell, are the ayahs of Holy Quran, and the hadiths cited from the Prophet of Islam, Mohammad (Blessings of God upon him and his progeny), and his Infallible Household.
The reward or punishment that we encounter in Hereafter, is the outcome of our deeds in the mortal world. Our good deeds result in our peace and prosperity, turning us into the inhabitants of paradise, while our sins and wrongdoings make us the inmates of Fire.
There are several gates to Hell. The 43rd and 44th ayahs of Surat Al-Hijr in Holy Quran note: "And indeed hell is the tryst of them all. It has seven gates, and to each gate belongs a separate portion of them."
The presence of several gates to hell and heaven is due to the several levels of the misdeeds and good deeds of mankind.
