Trump will learn Iranians never submit to pressure: FM Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says US President Donald Trump is grasping "at every straw" to portray his failed policies on Tehran as a success, stressing that Iranians will never bow to pressure.

According to Press TV, Zarif said in a post on his Twitter account on Sunday "Only thing proven is that he rejoices over the misery that he thinks he has imposed on ordinary Iranians. Like his predecessors, he will learn that Iranians never submit to pressure."

US President Trump has been pursuing a “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran, using economic sanctions to choke the country’s income sources.

Trump withdrew his country in May 2018 from the multilateral Iran nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and decided to re-impose unilateral sanctions against Tehran.

In November, the Trump administration announced the re-imposition of the “toughest” sanctions ever against Iran's banking and energy sectors with the aim of cutting off the country's oil sales and crucial exports.

A first round of American sanctions took effect in August, targeting Iran's access to the US dollar, metals trading, coal, industrial software, and auto sector.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said in February that the Iranian nation would stand firm in the face of an “economic” and “psychological” war being waged by the United States against the Islamic Republic.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting in Tehran, Rouhani said Washington is targeting the Iranian nation with an “economic, propaganda and psychological war.”

His remarks came after the Iranian foreign minister said all US plots against the Islamic Republic have failed thanks to the nation’s steadfastness in the face of Washington’s pressure tactics that have always proved to have reverse outcomes for the US.
