Iran's foreign minister offered his sympathy to South Africa, where more than 440 people have died and thousands have been left homeless following torrential rains that triggered floods and mudslides last week.

According to Tasnim news agency, in a message to South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian expressed sympathy over the damages caused by the floods that have killed and displaced hundreds of people.

The top Iranian diplomat also offered his condolences to the families of victims and to the South African government.

South Africa’s Armed Forces have been deployed to help with relief efforts in the KwaZulu-Natal Province, where more than 440 people have died in floods.

The floods have left thousands homeless, knocked out power and water services and disrupted operations at one of Africa’s busiest ports, Durban.
