  • What did Pezeshkian and Jalili say in first debate of second round of Iran's presidential election?

Pars Today – Mas'oud Pezeshkian and Saeid Jalili expressed their views and opinions on political and cultural issues in the first debate of the second round of Iran's 14th presidential election.

The 14th presidential election was held on June 28, 2024, and among the candidates, Mas'oud Pezeshkian and Saeid Jalili succeeded in gaining the most votes and advancing to the second round of the presidential election.

The first electoral debate between Pezeshkian and Jalili was held on Monday evening at the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) organization. This debate, which lasted over two hours, was broadcast live on television.

In this article from Pars Today, we will have a review on this debate.

Mas'oud Pezeshkian said in this debate:

"There are three principles in management: first, who is the manager; second, how they should work; and third, the principle of accountability. The art of management is that a person can have different alternatives to achieve a goal and say, 'I'll take this path, and if it doesn't work, I'll take another path.' The more alternatives we have on the table, the more our success is guaranteed."

Pezeshkian added,

"For me, foreign policy means identifying threats and crises ahead with honesty and foresight. Foreign policy means interaction, cooperation, securing national interests, and drawing inspiration from Iranian civilization and greatness. My foreign policy is for the welfare of the people, to create motivation for staying and building, and for economic growth, development, and psychological comfort, as well as stability for future generations."

He emphasized,

"The policies of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and Imam Khomeini are neither East nor West. The Leader has said that we work based on expediency, wisdom, and dignity. Wherever our dignity is preserved and our interests are served, we will go and talk."

Saeid Jalili also said in this debate,

"In these election days, the whole world was waiting to see what the result of the presidential election in Iran would be, because there was no predetermined outcome; the people were the deciding factor with their votes, and the same will happen again next Friday."

Jalili, referring to the fact that the power and progress that exist today are the result of people's participation, said: "One of the programs of my government will definitely be to increase people's participation in the country's administration in various economic, cultural, and political fields, day by day, in a more serious and effective manner."

Saeid Jalili, referring to his government's slogan, " A world of opportunities, a mega leap for Iran, every Iranian a brilliant role," stated,

"Every Iranian should feel that they can play a role according to their abilities, and the government should create this role-playing opportunity."

On the sideline

The first debate of the second round of the Iranian presidential election began with the broadcast of the Islamic Republic of Iran's national anthem and the recitation of the Holy Quran.

The back-and-forth conversation and ping-pong style exchange between Pezeshkian and Jalili on various topics was one of the interesting sidelines of this debate.

Jalili's help in reminding Pezeshkian of a phrase from Nahj al-Balagha was another notable sideline of this debate.

The observance of ethical dialogue by both individuals in this debate was very noticeable.

Additionally, Pezeshkian and Jalili hugged each other at the end of the debate.

It is worth mentioning that the second round of the presidential election will be held on Friday (June 5, 2024) across Iran to elect the ninth president.
