Pars Today – Imam Khomeini (God bless his soul), the revered founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, believed that if Muslims unite, no superpower would have the ability to aggress against them.
This article by Pars Today examines Imam Khomeini’s views on unity and brotherhood between Shia and Sunni under the banner of Islam, published in commemoration of Unity Week.
According to one narration, Friday, 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal 1404 AH, corresponding to 6 September 2025, marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and the beginning of Unity Week. Sunni Muslims observe the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, while Shia Muslims mark the 17th of the month as the Prophet’s birthday.
Imam Khomeini (RA), the esteemed founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran and a prominent advocate of unity in the Islamic World, utilized this occasion to promote solidarity among Muslims and closer ties between different Islamic groups. He designated the period between the two dates, from 12th to 17th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, as “Unity Week”.
Excerpt from Imam Khomeini (God bless his soul) on unity and brotherhood between Shia and Sunni for Unity Week
"Shias and Sunnis are brothers."
Imam Khomeini (God bless his soul) emphasized:
"We, the Shia, are one with Sunni Muslims; we are united, for we are all Muslims and brothers. If anyone speaks words that cause division among us Muslims, know that they are either ignorant or among those who wish to sow discord between Muslims. The matter of Shia and Sunni is not an issue at all—we are all brothers."
Hold firmly to the divine rope and do not be divided
The esteemed founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, identified the main problem of Muslims as their distance from Islam and the Qur’an. He emphasized:
"If Muslims adhered to what Allah has commanded—Hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided—then all their problems, whether political, social, or economic, would be resolved, and no power could oppose them."
Muslims must unite
Imam Khomeini (God bless his soul) further stated:
"My message to all Muslims is to unite, utilizing the full potential and large population they possess. If they unite, no superpower would have the ability to aggress against them."
The revered founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran expressed hope that Muslims and Islamic nations, following the guidance of Islam and the Qur’an, would remain brothers to each other and act with strength and determination against the enemies of humanity and Islam.
He emphasized that this unity could only be achieved by abandoning minor disputes among governments and acting like brothers, as such divisions allow enemies of Islam and Muslims to exploit them. Islamic unity requires all to gather under the banner of Islam and the Qur’an, because, as the Qur’an commands: be merciful to one another and firm against disbelievers.
