Pars Today- Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has welcomed China and Russia’s decisive action in vetoing Washington’s politically motivated draft resolution, describing it as a necessary step to defend the UN Charter.

According to Pars Today, citing IRIB, Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s ambassador and deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said in an address to a UN General Assembly meeting held to discuss Russia and China’s vetoes of the US anti-Iran resolution: “The US draft resolution was a politically motivated, legally baseless and hypocritical attempt to abuse the Security Council in order to revive the Panel of Experts of the illegitimate 1737 Committee, whose activities had been terminated under Resolution 2231.”

Darzi stressed that the Security Council must uphold the UN Charter and international law and reject any politicization or manipulation of its procedures. However, he said, the United States and its allies have repeatedly abused the Council’s procedures and powers to advance their narrow political objectives.

He added that China and Russia’s vetoes were principled and necessary actions that defended the UN Charter, international law, and the integrity and authority of the Council against its abuse.

Iran’s UN representative stressed that the repeated claim that Iran’s nuclear program is being diverted toward military objectives is a false narrative and a “big lie” first fabricated by the Israeli regime in 2003 and since then repeatedly echoed by the United States and some European countries. He said none of the reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed this fabricated claim.

Darzi said Iran has been a responsible member of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) since 1970 and has been under extensive IAEA monitoring for nearly 25 years. Meanwhile, he said, the “terrorist and genocidal Israeli regime” possesses nuclear weapons in the region, remains outside the NPT, and refuses to accept comprehensive safeguards and IAEA monitoring of its nuclear facilities.

He noted that the Security Council and the General Assembly must never become a forum where an aggressor seeks to punish the victim, distort facts and fabricate false legal justifications for its unlawful actions.
