  • Iranian official warns Saudis of Vietnam-like quagmire in Yemen

Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on international affairs, cautioned Saudi Arabia that its involvement in the war on Yemen could lead to the same catastrophe that the US government experienced in Vietnam.

“Saudi Arabia should expect to see Yemen turn into another Vietnam for that country,” Velayati said in a speech at a pro-Palestine conference in Iran’s northeastern city of Mashhad on Thursday, Tasnim News Agency reported.

He also said that any Iranian help for Yemen is in line with its humanitarian duties.

Velayati further pointed to the Syrian developments, underlining that the US government will definitely fail to break up Syria just as it ended up in failure in similar attempts in Iraq.

At least 14,000 people have been martyred since the onset of Saudi Arabia’s military campaign against Yemen in 2015. Much of the country's infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and factories, has been reduced to rubble due to the war.

The Saudi-led war has also triggered a deadly cholera epidemic across Yemen.

According to the World Health Organization’s latest tally, the cholera outbreak has killed 2,167 people since the end of April 2017 and is suspected to have infected 841,906.
